Dr. Beverly Basham DVM

Dr. Basham considers herself a nearly full Oregonian following her first 13 years spent playing in the sand and seas of Hawaii. She is an Oregon City High School graduate from a “few” years back ;) GO PIONEERS! From OCHS she spent a wonderful four years in Corvallis studying microbiology, chemistry and animal science before spreading her wings a bit further. She went out to the Midwest for 4 years to attend Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine and, once graduated, she considered striking out into other parts of the country but concluded she needed to return to the Pacific NW. Her roots in this beautiful part of the country, a love of outdoor adventures in the mountains, on the rivers and along the coast as well as her family drew her back home. She has been practicing as a small animal veterinarian in Oregon since vet school graduation in 2006.
It was never a question (other than a brief period in college when she thought about minoring in creative writing) for Dr. Basham that she would become a veterinarian. Her earliest memories involve taking care of orphaned or abandoned kittens and puppies that were sadly common in the area of Hawaii she lived, spending time at horse ranches in the mountains of Waimanalo and observing the wildlife in the marshlands near her home. This combined with a natural interest and skill in a number of fields of science created a calling to the field of veterinary medicine from an early age.
As a veterinarian, Dr. Basham feels so fortunate to be able to do this work each day- assisting her patients through their life stages and illness or injury with their people. Each morning, she begins her day with the loving intention of keeping the comfort and care of all her patients in focus. She meets her patients at their level with the intuitive skill born of a lifetime of love for all animals. Ready to greet dogs on the exam room floor to introduce herself on their terms first. The nervous feline responds well to her calm, soothing approach that helps to calm their fight or flight instinct natural in a veterinary hospital. She connects well with animal parents/owners and can help them navigate through whatever their pet may need and the decisions they may need to make. She understands some decisions that need to be made in the life of a pet can be emotional and complex. She is here for you through all the aspects of loving an animal: from the joys to the difficult times.
Her specific interests in veterinary medicine include various surgeries and she continues to learn and grow in this area so that she can provide you and your pet comprehensive care. She also is proficient in helping to identify underlying problems and treatment plans. This includes some cases that may be complex and more than meets the eye. She considers the specific needs of each patient, from their stage in life to breed and possible predispositions in focusing on preventative medicine and nutrition as well as proactive, early identification of problems and their treatments. When it comes time to begin the transition to end-of-life care, she will help you with compassion and understanding to determine the ideal comfort plan.

She currently shares her home with four furry critters- a geriatric bearded collie who continues to believe she is a pup (this would be Clover:), the comparative whipper snapper of a three legged chihuahua: Chi Chi, Simon the handsome silver tabby gentleman and the loving, cuddly cat named Nadine (affectionately known as the ‘shoulder cat’ for her love of sweetly asking via purr-chirping to be lifted so she can wrap about a person’s shoulder/neck without a hint of nails as one does house work, takes out the garbage, pulls weeds, etc). All love one another, unless Chi Chi has decided someone is a bit out of line. Yeah, she might be a bit of a tyrant, but she is loved in all her occasional bossiness.
Outside of practicing veterinary medicine, Dr. Basham enjoys long bicycle rides along the Springwater trail or random other routes and trails she finds to explore the surrounding areas near and far. She is also an avid appreciator of the arts and attends plays, live music events and local art exhibits. She has written numerous short stories, primarily science fiction and speculative fiction. Recently, she has adapted one such story into an animated short film that was presented at a local theater. She is currently working on her second animated short film.
